Sony Optical Block Malfunction – Extends Warranty

The following is a press release issued by Sony concerning a defective optical block on their TVs. Sony is extending their limited warranty to help cover this malfunction. Below is the press release by Sony:

If you have a red streak on the top of your TV after install a new XL-2400 lamp, the lamp is not defective. It is a defective optical block on your TV, Not a bad bulb.
Models: KDF-42E2000, KDF-46E2000, KDF-50E2000, and KDF-55E2000

As part of the Sony commitment to quality, Sony is announcing that it is extending the limited warranty (parts and labor), in the United States, on the optical block of the above-referenced 2006 model Microdisplay Rear Projection televisions until June 30, 2010, regardless of purchase date. For any customer who requires repair of the optical block on one of the affected models, Sony will cover the cost of the optical block repair (parts and labor) at no charge through June 30, 2010. This extended warranty does not apply to the replaceable projection lamp or the other parts that may be used in the televisions.

Sony is also announcing that for any owner of these model televisions who paid out-of-pocket expenses on or before February 28, 2009 for an estimate or repair service to replace the optical block, Sony will reimburse the customer by mail for the cost of the optical block and the labor expense to replace it, subject to certain conditions. To receive reimbursement, please follow completely the directions on the claim form for reimbursement attached here; all claims must be postmarked by April 15, 2009. All other terms of the Sony limited warranty continue to apply. Sony utilizes a network of hundreds of qualified independent third-party servicers to perform in-home television warranty service. Sony, through its authorized service network, will endeavor to repair your set within 30 days of your first contact. How to get the most out your DLP or LCD Lamp

Most rear projection televisions come with three presets. For example, the Sony’s LCD rear projection TVs has three presets Vivid, Standard and Pro. Vivid is the preset the KDS-R60XBR1 is set to when first taking it out of the box. The “Vivid” setting will lessen the life of the lamp to approximately 3600 hours because it is the brightest setting. The “Standard” setting will extend to about 5300 hours of lamp life and “Pro” will further extend the lamp life to around 8000 hours. No matter what rear projection TV you own, changing the picture setting to normal or standard will lengthen the life of the lamp. Decreasing the contrast setting to around 50% will accomplish the same.

Here is a checklist of what to do to get the most out of your lamp:

  1. Check out the presets and select the setting with the lowest light output.
  2. Once you’ve done that adjust the brightness down to your liking. The lower the brightness the long the lamp will last.
  3. Check and clean the air filters on a monthly basis. Having a clean air filters means that your lamp has better airflow. Air is what is used to cool the lamp and the cooler your lamp runs the longer it will last.
